I was having a discussion with a friend about how to balance realism and believability in a fantasy world. I was explaining my take on how a magic system would work, and he was countering with some of the rules from D&D. I pointed out that, while the D&D rules might work well for the game, they wouldn’t translate well to a realistic world. He argued that it would be “too powerful” for characters to be able to cast magic like that, and that the rules needed to be more restrictive. I pointed out that, if you wanted to make magic more restricted, you could add additional costs, like mental anguish or a loss of autonomy. He argued that this would make it less powerful than in D&D, where magic is just a straightforward skill. I countered that, if you wanted to keep it more like D&D, you could add additional consequences for each spell, like damage or side effects.
