Why do humans have such an insatiable appetite for destruction?

I know, I know, it's a bit of a weird question. But I'll give you some context. I was talking to a friend and we started talking about how much of human history is about destruction and bloodshed. Like, there's hardly any period where there isn't some war happening somewhere in the world. We can't seem to stop fighting. Not to mention all the other forms of destruction: climate change, pollution, animal extinction, destruction of the planet's natural resources. It seems like humans are like a virus that can't be stopped.

Now, I know we've made some progress. We've had periods of peace and we've managed to come to an understanding on things like civil rights. And yeah, I think it's great. But it doesn't seem to be enough. We just can't seem to get it together as a species. We keep fighting each other and we're destroying the planet. Why? Why can't we just stop fighting for one second?
