I'm asking as a neutral third party, because I'm not really into romance. But I realize that it is a big part of fantasy and I'd like to understand.

If sex is important to your story, why? What's the point of it?

I see a lot of sex in fantasy, but it doesn't really seem to have any point, except as titillation. Even if it's "important" to the story, why? Why should we care? I would much rather read a story that doesn't include any sex or romance, but that has other interesting plot elements.

I know I'm in the minority, but I would rather not have sex or romance in a story at all, because it's usually pointless and takes away from the other plot. The only exception is if there's a meaningful story behind the sex. I'm not a prude or anything. I think the sex scenes in Game of Thrones were actually good examples of storytelling, because they showed what kind of person a character is.

For example, the scene in the first season where Renly is having sex with his servant, and then kisses a man right after. This showed that he was gay, and also that he was a narcissistic jerk who would have sex with anyone. I would rather read a story that has scenes like that, than a story where characters just have sex because it's "normal". What are your thoughts? Do you agree or disagree? Why or why not?

I know this is a popular topic in worldbuilding, so I figured I'd ask and see what you guys think.
