This has been a problem for me for a long time now, and I can’t find much content about this specific problem. I’m going to use an example, because it is the easiest to understand:

Let’s say in your world, slavery is legal, and allowed for certain people. How do you deal with the fact that you, as a white male, are profiting off of slavery? In a way, you are owning slaves. If your characters are wealthy, it’s likely that they will own slaves. Now, let’s say you’re world builds around a specific city or region, but the people you’re following have to travel. How do you deal with the fact that they own slaves, and are using them to build a castle, for example?

The problem is, I want to be able to explore the world I’m making without feeling like I’m morally compromised. I’m not talking about things like killing innocent civilians, I’m talking about the fact that in many societies, owning a slave is considered a basic right. If you’re creating a fantasy world, you can’t really say “oh, slavery is morally wrong,” because you’ll have to justify why you think it’s morally wrong. You’ll have to explain what is morally wrong about owning a slave.

So, how do you deal with the uncomfortable, weird parts of world building?
