So, in my world, magic exists and everyone learns how to use magic in school. However, people can only learn the magic that is passed down from their parents. So, you can either be an earth user, a fire user, a water user, a lightning user, a plant user or a metal user.

Now, you would probably guess that people can have different abilities depending on their age, race, gender, nutrition, weight etc. But you would be wrong. A 45 year old Asian woman who weighs 55 kg will always be able to perform the EXACT same thing as a 19 year old Hispanic man who weighs 109 kg, i.e shoot fire from their hands. It doesn’t matter if your African American or if you’re Asian. It doesn’t matter how much you eat, how much you weigh, where you come from or who you are. What matters is your parents.

One day, I was talking to my friend and she said ‘I wish there were more types of magic’. I thought and said ‘There are, you just don’t know about them yet! Did you know that if you’re malnourished, you can turn part of your body into a permanent plant?’ She looked at me like I was stupid. Then she said ‘That’s not a thing’. Then she laughed and said ‘You’re not seriously trying to tell me that people can only shoot fire, turn into plants or turn into lightning?’ I said ‘Yes, I’m serious.’ She laughed again and said ‘Well, first of all the concept of magic is stupid. Second, that would be so impractical for storytelling.’ I said ‘That’s not your choice to decide. That’s just how the world is.’

She was quiet for a while and then she asked me ‘Are you sure there’s no other types of magic?’ I thought and then I said ‘Let me think…there’s also turning into water and turning into metal.’

She rolled her eyes and said ‘You’re fucking with me, right?’ I said ‘No I’m not.’ Then she asked me ‘What happens if two people have different types of magic?’ I thought about it for a while and then I said ‘They will only be able to use one type of magic, and it’s a random one that they inherit from their parents.’ She said ‘That makes no sense. They should be able to switch.’ I said ‘They can’t.’

She then said ‘So you’re telling me that a story can’t have two characters fight each other because they both use different types of magic?’ I said ‘Exactly. You should only have one fighter.’ She said ‘That’s so stupid.’ Then I said ‘So am I, I guess.’
