The worst thing that happened to me while traveling

In 2017, I was in Bangkok for a few days for work and was staying in a pretty nice hotel that my company booked. The first night, I went to sleep at around 10pm as usual and heard a noise that sounded like someone was walking around in the room next to me. At first I thought nothing of it because it was a pretty big hotel, and people sometimes woke me up at night.

The next night at around 10pm, the same thing happened, but this time the banging sounded louder and I could tell it was in my room. I told myself that there must be some kind of animal living in the room, and that I should open the door to see. When I opened it, I saw a woman in a white nightgown walking around my room. She was a hotel staff member, and she was in the process of cleaning my room.

I was shocked, angry, and embarrassed all at once. I didn’t know what to say, but I did know that I didn’t want her to see my face. So, I quickly closed the door and went to the elevator. I got out on the floor below mine and walked down to the lobby.

The next morning, I checked out of the hotel and went to a nearby hostel to stay. The hostel owner asked me what had happened the night before, and I told him the story.

He said that he had a similar experience at a different hotel and told me that I should go to the police. I didn’t do that, but I did file a formal complaint with my company. I never stayed at that hotel again.

The incident still makes me uncomfortable to this day. It was a wake-up call for me to be more careful when staying in hotels.

TLDR: A hotel staff member entered my room and was in the process of cleaning it while I was there. I was shocked and angry, but I did not go to the police.
