I had the craziest airport experience in India.

So, I am a white woman traveling around India right now. I have had some pretty negative experiences with some Indians since arriving in India, mostly from the male population, and have generally found it difficult to make female friends while traveling alone in India.

Yesterday at a very busy airport, a man approached me and asked me to come over to his desk. I was in the domestic terminal at Mumbai airport and he had some kind of “medical center” sign up above his desk. I didn’t think much of it and walked over to his desk. He asked me for my passport and visa, then asked for money. I said no and to return my passport and visa, and he said “I have your passport.” And he held it in his hand. I asked him to give me my passport back and he kept saying “no” over and over again. I said “you have to give it to me, I need it to board my flight” and he kept saying no, and that he was from the government and that I was required to pay him money. He was holding my passport the whole time, so I was literally in tears. There was no one to ask for help, and I had no idea what he was talking about. I finally broke down and said I’d pay him, and he took my money, handed me my passport and told me to “go.” I left and went straight to my gate to board my flight.

This experience was very scary and I have never been in a situation like this before, and I am still very shaken up by it. Has this happened to any other women travelers before?
