I'm currently stuck in Istanbul. My flights have been cancelled, my friends have been arrested, and hundreds of tourists are stuck here in the midst of a civil war.

I'm currently safe, but I don't know if that will continue for much longer. The airports are closed, the metro is shut down, and curfews have been issued in several areas. Soldiers are being sent to arrest people with links to the coup.

If you're in Turkey, be very careful. Turks are being friendly and protective, but I can't stress enough that this is a dangerous situation. If you work for the government or have any connections to it, you could be arrested on the spot. If you're at the airports, get to a hotel. If you're in a hotel, try to find someone to drive you out of the city. If you have to stay outside of the city, stay close to a military base.

The Turkish people are wonderful and I have no fear of them. They are just citizens of a country in the midst of chaos.

I'm checking for updates constantly and I'll try to post updates. For now, I can only sit and wait for news.

Edit 1: I've heard that the airports are now opening. If you're in Istanbul and need to get to the airport and have no car, send me a message with your hotel and I'll message you back with instructions.

Edit 2: I have been told that the military is now moving to shut down the airporst. This may not be an option for long.

Edit 3: The airports have been shut down. If you need to get out, you need to do it by road.

Edit 4: I have been told that the subway is now open. I'm making my way to the train and will find a way out of the city. I'll post when I can connect to wifi again.

Edit 5: The power is out in my area. I'm assuming the train is shut down as well, so I have stayed. I'm trying to get more information on what is happening.

Edit 6: The power has stayed on, and since I have been confirmed safe I am planning on trying to leave the country by driving to Greece.

Edit 7: The Marmara highway is now closed. I'm assuming this will prevent me from leaving the city. I will try to find another way out of the city tomorrow. It is currently 6:30.

Edit 8: After speaking to someone in the military, I have an itinerary to leave the country. I will be leaving the city tomorrow. I will post updates on my journey as I have wifi.

Edit 9: I am on the road and making progress. I'll post an update from the border soon.

Edit 10: I made it to Greece! I'll post an update soon.
