What happens if you get stuck in a place like the North or South Pole?

We are often familiar with stories of explorers who went on expeditions in extreme climatic conditions. Sometimes, because of unforeseen weather, lack of resources or other issues, these explorers may get stuck. What do they do if they get stuck in such extreme places?
