Every time I travel abroad I'm astounded that the wealth gap in the United States is so much larger than other countries.

I'm American and I travel internationally several times a year. Yesterday I was in Oslo, Norway. I was at the supermarket and I saw a gentleman maybe mid 40s working at the store. He was dressed nice and had a wonderful personality. I asked him about his job, and he told me he made enough to live a great life and he was able to go on a boat vacation with his wife and family to the Mediterranean this year.

In contrast, just yesterday I saw a gentleman asking for money on the streets of DC. I asked him about his life. He told me he was a former Army medic. He couldn't afford a place to live, he was staying in a hotel at the moment, and he was working at a Wendy's as a janitor. He couldn't afford healthcare. He made just enough to barely afford rent.

I don't understand why this is. I don't understand how we as a society allow this.
