The worst country I visited was Libya. I had never heard of Gaddafi until I was assigned to work in Libya. At that time (2011), I had been living and working in the Middle East for 4 years, and had never seen any mention of Libya in the news.

All the other Arab countries had their own set of rules, cultures, and ways of life that I was able to learn to navigate.

Libya was different. The culture and the way of life was so strange to me, I could not navigate it. There were no rules, there was no culture, there was no way of life. The country was run by Gaddafi and his army. There was no civil society, no judiciary system, no laws.

It was like living in a jungle. No restaurants, no grocery stores. If you wanted to eat, you had to eat with Gaddafi. And he didn’t eat with you unless you were his friend. And he only had a select few friends, and they were all in the army.

There were no roads, no streets, no buildings. It was a desert, nothing but sand. And the sand was hot. Very hot.

It was like being lost in a hot desert with no water, no shade, no shelter, and no way out. And you had no idea where you were or where you were going.

That was Libya to me.
