My girlfriend is from China and has never felt uncomfortable or unsafe in China. I asked her why, when I have been to China and experienced a lot of uncomfortable and unsafe situations. She said it’s because I’m white.

This might seem obvious, but as a white American, I have never been more uncomfortable or felt more unsafe than in China. I have been to China two times and the experience has been the most difficult of any country I have visited. <br><br>My girlfriend is from southern China and has never experienced any uncomfortable or unsafe situations in her home country. She has lived all over China, from north to south, east to west. <br><br>She said that while I was in China, it was because I am white. I said, “so your black American friends would experience the same thing I did in China?”<br><br>She said no. She said that black Americans are treated very badly in China. <br><br>I asked her, “So black Americans would feel unsafe and uncomfortable in China, but white Americans would not?”<br><br>She said yes.<br><br>I asked her why she thought that was the case. She said, “it’s pretty simple. China doesn’t like black people, but they think they are superior to white people.”<br><br>I said, “So you are saying the Chinese government and Chinese people think that black people are inferior and white people are superior?”<br><br>She said yes.<br><br>I said, “That doesn’t sound like a positive thing. Why would China’s people and government think that?”<br><br>She said, “China is a shit country. They are shitty people.”<br><br>I asked her why she lived in China and still lived there. <br><br>She said, “China is my home. I love my country.”<br><br>I said, “Then you shouldn’t think that China is superior to black Americans and inferior to white Americans.”<br><br>She said, “I don’t. I’m just stating the facts. Black Americans are treated very badly in China. It’s very simple.”
