This happened to me and a friend in November last year.

We stayed in a little town in Portugal for 8 days in an apartment that was very nice looking in the photos.

The first day we got there we had no problem entering the apartment, it had everything we needed and we settled in well, everything was nice and clean and we had a good first night.

The day after I woke up to find water everywhere in the apartment, it had rained a lot that night but there was water all over the floor. We called our host, who lived in the country and was unreachable by phone.

We waited for hours in the freezing cold apartment and eventually she called us back, telling us it would take her two days to come fix the issue.

We had no heating and the water was still dripping everywhere, and the first night had been very cold as well.

I asked if there was anything she could send us to help with the water, a bucket or something. She said she didn't have anything to bring to us and that we had to wait for her to come and fix it.

Two days turned into three, three turned into four and on the fourth day she finally showed up. She said she had left the day after we told her to come and help us, but her husband had diverted to another city and she was stuck alone in the city we were in.

She fixed the issue and left and we thought that was it.

The second night of staying there the electricity went out, it was the middle of the night and we had no idea what to do. We called our host again, hoping she would answer, but she was out of network and we had no idea where she was. We waited until 4am to call again, until she finally answered. She said she had left her daughter's number for us and we should call her. We tried calling the number and she didn't answer, so we called again at 6am and she finally answered, telling us it would take her until the end of the day to come and fix the electricity.

So we spent the whole day in the apartment with no air or light, not even a phone charger, which we had to charge with a computer all day.

She finally came in the evening, apologized and said she had left to a friend's birthday party.

After this second night we decided to go to a hotel to get some peace and quiet away from the constant issues.

We told her we were leaving, and she said she was gonna refund us the days we didn't stay there.

It had been two bad nights, but two days worth of rent wasn't enough to make us happy, so we decided to go back to her apartment to collect our luggage.

We asked for her money back for the days we didn't stay there, which were 4 out of 8 days.

She said she would never give us back money for days we didn't stay at her apartment, and she kept being stubborn.

So we asked for reimbursement of the two nights we slept there because it had been extremely uncomfortable and we didn't even have access to light or heating.

Again, she said she wouldn't give us any money back.

So we asked her if she could give us back the money for the 2 days we actually slept there, the two nights that we had problems with the apartment.

She then started being very mad at us and said that we had stayed there for 8 days, so we would get reimbursed for 8 days, nothing less.

I have the whole conversation in voice memos and pictures of all the messages we exchanged.

I messaged her several times, trying to be polite and explaining the situation, but she wouldn't budge and even threatened to report me to the Airbnb, even though I had done nothing wrong.

She never reimbursed us and Airbnb couldn't help with anything either, saying it was a personal issue and they couldn't intervene.

We paid a lot of money to stay at her apartment for 8 days, but only slept there for 2 nights.

This is my worst Airbnb experience ever.
