For years we’ve been making fun of “dad’s laptops”, with the “I want it all” approach of a smartphone, but with a big screen, a keyboard, and the ability to multitask. But now, thanks to Apple and Google, this vision is finally a reality.

With the introduction of iPadOS and the advent of Apple’s “Universal Control”, you can finally use your iPhone and iPad as one device. You can drag and drop apps seamlessly between the two, and use the keyboard and mouse of one to control the screen of the other. This means you could be sitting on the couch, using your iPhone as a second screen, and typing away on the keyboard of your iPad.

And this is not limited to Apple devices. Google just announced that you will soon be able to use your Android phone as a second screen on your Chromebook or Pixel, thanks to “Split View”.

In essence, the line between different form factors is becoming increasingly blurred, and soon we’ll be able to use all of our devices as one. The “dad’s laptop” is no longer a joke, but our future.
