Why did Google kill off Google Reader?

It's crazy to me that Google killed off Google Reader back in 2013 but is bringing back Google Plus. Google Reader was something that many people used on a daily basis and it was such an awesome tool for following all of your favorite blogs. It was so much more useful than Google Plus could have ever been. There's no way Google didn't lose readers and commenting users in killing it off. Stupid.
