Why are the worst android phones the only ones available on carrier stores?

I’m trying to avoid the apple store and the “no trade in” policy and I’m trying to look for android options. I can’t seem to find any phones on US carrier stores (Verizon, att, tmo) other than the “honor” phones like the xiaomi p30. It’s pretty weird to me.
