My husband (33M) is shocked that people in my (38F) generation care about the things we do in High School. What’s the point of even going to school if we can’t do anything with the information?

My husband has been a small business owner for the better part of his adult life. He is also a graduate of a highly regarded Ivy league college.

We are discussing the college applications of our child (10) and he is surprised at the weight that colleges now give to high school activities outside of the classroom.

He says things like “what does it matter if you were valedictorian or if you played football”, “why should a student major in something just because they minored in that subject in high school”, “what does it matter if you did volunteer work or if you took AP classes”, “why should your college application include your high school class presidents”, and so on.

I told him that not only am I considering these things, but all of parents I know are, and all of our children are being taught that these are important in school. He seems baffled because he doesn’t see the point of doing any of this, and I think it’s because his experience of the world is vastly different from my experience of the world.
