I am a 21 year old black woman, my boyfriend is a 21 year old white guy. I am very self conscious of my gums, which are super prominent, and super colored. It’s never been an issue for us. I have orthodontic work and get them cleaned every 3 months.

We were joking around the other day, he then said “I don’t get why yours are so big and colored”. I said it has to do with the enamel.

Then he said “I obviously don’t date black women because of that. I wouldn’t want to go out with someone with that”. I asked “what? I’m black”. He said “oh I knew you were, that’s why, I wouldn’t date a black woman because of the gums. I wouldn’t want to go out with someone with that all the time”.

I asked if that was a joke and he said no.

I feel bad that the first thing he thought of in my mouth was how awful it is. I told the whole story to my sister and she said that is racist. I think it’s just gross, and I broke up with him. I told him I couldn’t possibly be with someone who would be prejudiced against an entire race of people like that, and he couldn’t even come to me and apologize, he just kept saying I left out of nowhere.

He is saying I am being dramatic, but I don’t know if I am, or if I have to give him a second chance. I just don’t know how to feel.

Edit to add: Holy cow this blew up! Thank you all so much for your advice and support. I am going to edit the title because of volume of responses and to avoid bots.

I did talk to him again, and he tried to paint me as being jealous or racist (which I’m not). I was firm that I wouldn’t put up with anything like that. I really did think he was better than that, but it really wasn’t until later I understood that he wasn’t, and that was probably never going to change. He said he was sorry and would change, but I really think he was just trying to get me back.

And to put your minds at rest, I have had my fair share of dates and boyfriends, and they have never said anything remotely like this. No one has ever mentioned my gums in that way. And I think I’m pretty attractive.

I also don’t think he is racist. I don’t think he hates black people or thinks they are inferior. I don’t think he even really understands what he did or why it was wrong. I think he’s just a piece of shit.

Tl;dr: Boyfriend wouldn’t date a black woman because of her gums.
