Philosophy is a tool, not an end in itself

I see a lot of people in philosophy, especially on chambers, who seem to think philosophy is a thing you can do just for the sake of doing. These people are often critical of anyone who says philosophy isn’t useful in real life or isn’t worth doing in general. They are often also critical of other fields of study and their application to real life. They are often also critical of anything practical. It seems like a lot of them just like philosophy for philosophy’s sake and see the value of nothing else.

I’m not like that. I think a lot of fields of study, including philosophy, are useful tools that we should be using to improve our lives and our society. I don’t see a problem with philosophy not being the most useful tool. I think philosophy should be a bit more self critical of its utility and usefulness. I see a lot of philosophical schools and theories that don’t really have practical applications or are only useful in very niche situations.

What do you guys think?
