Is it morally right to make your children follow a religion you don't believe in?

A friend recently shared with me that his parents are forcing him to go to church every Sunday and to believe in God but neither of them believe in any sort of higher power. I understand their intentions were to give him a moral compass but it also feels like he's being lied to. He's being told to believe in something they don't believe in and for what reason? They told him it's to have a moral compass, but they never live by those morals and he shouldn't be expected to. I've had similar thoughts on religion in general, is it really right to force your beliefs onto your children and then expect them to live by those morals and not question them?
