The climb was hard, but I made it up. I had to. It was the only way to find her.

I stood at the top of the mountain, my eyes scanning the horizon. It was a long way down. I felt a rush of fear, but it only fueled my resolve. I took a deep breath and started down the other side.

It was hard, but I made it to the bottom. The forest stretched out before me, dense and dark. I walked through it, calling her name.

I didn't hear a thing.

I kept going, deeper into the forest. I walked for hours, maybe even days. I lost count of time.

Then I heard a voice.

"Hello?"

I stopped dead in my tracks. "Where are you?"

"I'm coming to you. Just wait."

I stood there, frozen with anticipation. I heard footsteps, light and quick. They grew louder, closer.

Then a hand grasped my shoulder. I spun around, but there was nobody there. The forest was empty.

I turned back around, looking up. There was a figure above me, looming in the darkness. I couldn't make out their face, but I knew exactly who it was.

"You didn't have to do this," they said.

"I had to," I replied. "I couldn't live without you."

The figure leaned in, their voice dropping to a whisper. "I'm glad you came for me," they said. "But now you're in danger. You have to get out of here, now."

I looked around frantically. "What is this place?"

"This place is hell," the figure replied. "And you've been climbing for nothing. There is no way down from here."

I stared up at them in horror. "What do you mean?"

The figure reached out and grasped my hand. "You should have stayed in your bed," they said.

I tried to pull my hand back, but it was too late. The figure pulled me up into the darkness, higher and higher.

I screamed and screamed, but nobody came.

I never stopped climbing.

I never reached the top.

I never found my way back down.

I'm still climbing.

And I never will.
