As soon as I unlocked the door to her apartment and saw the concerned look on my face, my sister opened her arms for a hug.

It was only Tuesday, and we were supposed to celebrate the end of her ex-boyfriend moving out by having us girls night. We ordered takeout and sat on the couch to eat. I had a bad feeling about this guy from the start. I’m usually the best judge of character out there, but this one was off from the beginning. I told Emily as much as soon as he moved out, and she agreed with me.

The three of our friends, Kate, Hannah, and Rachel, walked Emily home from her place and we spent the night playing board games on the couch and drinking wine. We called an Uber for Emily around 2am and said our goodbyes before getting ready for bed.

I went to sleep around 2:30 and woke up to a loud knock on my door at around 8am. My heart dropped as I wondered what could have happened to cause someone to bang on my door so hard. I rubbed the remaining sleep from my eyes before grabbing the phone to call my sister. The call went straight to voicemail. I tried again, and still nothing. I bolted out of bed to run to my sister’s place.

I burst through the door and saw my sister in tears and sitting on the couch, wrapped in a blanket. She looked like she’d been crying for hours. Hannah and Kate sat across from her, with Rachel sitting in an arm chair in the corner of the room.

“What’s going on Emily?” I asked, rushing to her side.

Between sobs, Emily managed to tell us that she woke up around 5:30 to get a drink of water. She felt like she couldn’t sleep anymore and got out of bed to get one from the fridge. She walked to the kitchen, but on her way there she noticed that the bathroom door was open, and it was usually closed. She walked inside to close it and noticed that the towels were on the counter and the bathmat was in the bathtub.

“I just walked in and there was a hand print on the mirror,” Emily said. She broke down into sobs. “I thought I was imagining things at first, but I looked into the bathtub and it was covered in water. Someone was in the shower.”

Rachel handed Emily some tissues to help her stop crying.

“I went to call 911, but then I looked into the mirror again and the hand print was gone. The towels were back on the towel bar, and the bathmat was back on the floor. It was like I had dreamed the whole thing.”

I couldn’t believe what I was hearing, and I knew Rachel, Kate, and Hannah couldn’t either.

“I went back to my room,” Emily continued, wiping her nose with the tissues. “I laid down in bed and closed my eyes and tried to pretend the whole thing had happened and I fell right to sleep.”

I looked around the room to see if anyone was going to say something about how stupid that was, but everyone was staring at the floor.

“What do you mean you fell asleep?”

Emily looked down at her hands and mumbled something under her breath. I couldn’t make out what she said, but Kate heard her and repeated it for me.

“She said it was like her mind was trying to protect her.”

I wasn’t sure how to respond, but then something clicked in my brain and I had to know what happened. “What did you mean by ‘it’?” I asked.

Emily looked up from the floor and stared directly at me. “When I closed my eyes, I could still hear everything going on in the house.”

I was getting more confused by the minute. “What are you talking about?” I asked.

“What I heard next…what I heard next scared the shit out of me.”

Emily paused and took a deep breath before continuing. “I heard Hannah go into the bathroom.”

Rachel and Kate stood up. “What? That’s not true!” Kate yelled. I looked at Rachel, who looked like she wanted the floor to swallow her whole.

“What did you do in there?” I asked.

“I didn’t do anything!” Kate screamed at the top of her lungs. She looked like she was ready to lose it, and she started screaming at me for accusing her of something she didn’t do.

I stopped her tirade by putting my hands over her mouth. “Okay, okay. Let’s calm down. Tell me what really happened.”

Kate took a few deep breaths and calmed down enough to explain what really happened in the bathroom. She went in to pee and heard a strange noise coming from the living room. She looked into the hallway and saw that the curtains were open and she saw something crawling under the couch. Kate didn’t want to look at it and was scared to move, so she stayed there and called out for Emily and Hannah.

When no one answered, Kate ran to her room and locked the door. She waited for someone to come in and talk to her, but after about ten minutes of nothing but creepy sounds, she decided to stay quiet and wait it out.

“How long were you in there?” I asked.

Kate thought for a minute. “I guess it was around twenty minutes.”

I looked over at Hannah, who looked like she was ready to pass out. “What did you do when Kate called out to you?” I asked Emily.

Emily stared at Hannah before answering. “Hannah ran into the bathroom and slammed the door. She was screaming and I don’t know what else to say.”

Hannah buried her face in her hands and started crying. “It’s in the house and I don’t know what to do,” she sobbed.

I felt like I was losing my mind and needed answers. I didn’t know what to do to help my sister and her friends, and I certainly didn’t know what was causing all the creepy noises and things crawling around the house. “I think we need to find out what’s going on,” I said. “I’m not going to let you four stay in this house all night.”

I picked up my phone and called a taxi, then grabbed Emily’s purse for her. She grabbed a few things to throw in her bag, like a change of clothes and her phone charger, and we got ready to leave. Rachel and Kate were quiet as we left the apartment and walked to the taxi.

We hailed a cab and got in, and as we drove away from the apartment, I felt like I left everything I knew behind. Emily fell silent as we drove away and I knew she was still scared about whatever happened.

As I looked out the back window to see where we were going, I noticed the taxi driver was taking a very long way around the block to get back to where we came from. “We’re not going back to your place, are we?” I asked Emily.

“No. I don’t think we should.”

We told the taxi driver to turn the car back around, and we went back to Emily’s place.

We got out of the taxi and walked back to the apartment. I felt better knowing we weren’t leaving my sister alone there. When we walked inside, I knew something was off.

“Where is it?” I whispered. I didn’t know what it was, but I knew I didn’t like whatever feeling was going on in the house. Emily and I walked around and called out, but there was no answer.

“Maybe it went away,” Emily said. She sounded hopeful, and I tried to believe her. We searched every room in the apartment and found nothing. We even looked in the closet, under the beds, and in the kitchen cabinets. There was nothing.

I didn’t believe it.

I walked into the living room and sat on the couch, then noticed something crawling on the ground. It was fast and kept crawling under the couch. “What the fuck is that thing?” I yelled.

I jumped off the couch and ran to the kitchen to get a garbage bag. I got it, ran back to the couch, and crawled under it to get the thing. It was fast, and I could hear it moving under the couch. I finally managed to get it in the garbage bag and tied the top as tight as I could.

I dragged the bag to the bathroom and tossed it in the shower. “What is this fucking thing?” I yelled at the ceiling. I slammed my fists on the counter and screamed at the top of my lungs, “I don’t know what’s going on here, but I am going to find out!”
