As I sit here writing this, my mind is racing with emotion. I haven't slept in days and I'm not sure I ever will. I can barely remember a life before the events that led me to this; before the events that led me to sit here and write these words.

I’ve always been the quieter twin. My sister, Aria, has always been the extroverted one, the charming one, the beautiful one. That’s why when she first made her discovery, I didn’t believe it at first. I didn’t want to.

I still remember the day she first found it. I had just gotten home from work, and was in the kitchen making myself a snack when Aria came into the living room from the bedroom.

“You won’t believe what I just did,” she said with a huge smile on her face.

“Try me.”

“I made animals talk,” she said, still grinning.

That was enough to get me to listen. “What do you mean?” I asked.

“I mean I was outside smoking a joint and a bird started talking to me,” she said.

I raised an eyebrow. “A bird started talking to you?”

“Yeah. So I was sitting on the stairs, smoking a joint, and there was this bird perched in a nearby tree.”

“A bird started talking to you?”

“Yeah. I swear it did. It started saying the most ridiculous things I’ve ever heard.”

I sighed. “Like what?”

“Like it said, ‘Stop smoking pot, it’s bad for the birds’,” she said.

I rolled my eyes. “That doesn’t sound like a bird.”

“Come on. I recorded it,” she said.

My curiosity got the better of me, and I followed her to the bedroom where there was a tablet on the bed playing a recording.

To my surprise, the recording was of a bird talking. The video showed Aria sitting on the stairs smoking a joint, and a bird sitting in a nearby tree.

> “Stop smoking pot, it’s bad for the birds.”

>
> “I know pot smoke hurt your bird friends before,” it said. “But I’m saying it again, because I don’t want your kind to destroy the world my friends and I love.”

I sat down next to her on the bed. “How did you make the bird talk?”

“I don’t know,” she said.

“How did you make the bird talk?”

“I don’t know,” she repeated.

“Well, you did it. You made a bird talk,” I said.

“Thanks,” she smiled. “I guess.”

The next day I had to go back to work, so when I got home Aria was waiting for me.

“I made an animal do something today,” she said.

“Yeah? What?”

“The dog next door started talking to me.”

“Yeah? What did it say?”

“The dog started saying, ‘Your sister is hot’,” she said.

I rolled my eyes. “‘Your sister is hot’?”

“Yeah. Isn’t that sexy?” she asked.

“Yeah,” I agreed. “But how did you make the dog talk?”

“I don’t know,” she said.

“How did you make the dog talk?” she asked.

“I don’t know,” she repeated.

“Well, you did it. You made a dog talk,” I said.

“Thanks,” she smiled. “I guess.”

Aria’s power, as we started to call it, got better and better every day. The day after that she made a cat talk, the day after that she made two birds talk to each other, the day after that she even made two dogs have a conversation.

I was the first to suggest we record all of this.

We sat in the living room and made a video of Aria using her power. It was exhilarating to see the different reactions from the birds and the cats and the dogs.

When we had made enough footage, we uploaded it to YouTube.

At first no one came. But slowly, the views started to pile up. People were commenting, saying things like:

> I wish I had a super power.

> You’re a genius.

> You’re so hot.

We laughed at the comments, and we laughed at the likes and the subscribers.

Then, one day, Aria made an animal say something we didn’t like.

It happened when we were outside smoking.

“You’re so hot,” a passing bird said.

“That’s okay. At least I’m not feathered,” a pigeon replied.

“I wish I was feathered. Then I’d be as beautiful as this bird,” a squirrel said.

“You’re hot too,” the pigeon said.

“I am? How?” the squirrel asked.

“I’ve never told you this before, but you remind me of my late lover,” the pigeon said.

Aria gasped.

“Your late lover?” the squirrel asked.

“Yeah,” the pigeon said. “You remind me of her.”

“That’s sweet,” the squirrel said. “I’m glad I remind you of your lover.”

“Yeah me too,” the pigeon said. “I wish your friend here had the wings of a bird.”

“I wish that too,” the squirrel said.

“I wish we could all have the beauty of a bird,” the pigeon said.

“Then we could be together like your lover and you,” the squirrel said.

“I wish it were that easy,” the pigeon said.

Aria looked at me and frowned. I felt uneasy.

When we went inside I asked her if she was okay.

“I’m fine,” she said.

“If you’re sure.”

“If I said something that made you uncomfortable, then just forget about it, okay?”

“Okay,” I said. I didn’t want to pry, but I had to know.

“What did the pigeon mean when it said you remind it of its lover?” I asked.

“What?” she asked.

“You just said you wish you had the wings of a bird because I remind you of your late lover,” I said.

“I don’t know what the pigeon meant,” she said.

“Come on,” I said. “Tell me what happened.”

She looked down, embarrassed.

“I used my power to seduce men,” she said.

I was disgusted.

“Why would you do something like that?” I asked.

“I didn’t tell you because I was ashamed,” she said.

“I wish you had told me,” I said.

The next day I had to go back to work again. I didn’t feel like talking to Aria so I just said bye to her and went out the door.

At work no one asked me about Aria, and I preferred it that way.

I spent the day staring at the clock, waiting for five o’clock to come so I could go home.

When I got home Aria was sitting in the living room smoking.

“Where have you been?” she asked.

“I had work,” I said.

“Yeah? What did you do today?”

“I sat at a desk all day,” I said.

“Cool. I had an interesting day,” she said.

“What happened?”

“While I was smoking out here a dog started talking to me,” she said.

I rolled my eyes. “A dog started talking to you?”

“Yeah. So I was sitting on the stairs smoking a joint, and there was this dog walking down the road.”

“A dog started talking to you?”

“Yeah. So the dog said, ‘I hope your power doesn’t make you do bad things,’” she said.

I sighed. “That doesn’t sound like a dog.”

“Come on. I recorded it,” she said.

My curiosity got the better of me, and I followed her to the bedroom where there was a tablet on the bed playing a recording.

To my surprise, the recording was of a dog talking. Okay.”

“But today a bird said you’re hot,” I said.

“Yeah? What’s wrong with that?”

“I don’t know,” I said. “It just made me uncomfortable.”

“Yeah? Okay.”

“I’m just saying I don’t like it when the animals talk badly about you,” I said.

“Okay,” she said. “I won’t let them.”

“Yeah? Okay.”

“I just wish you wouldn’t talk like that,” I said.

“I won’t,” she said.

At first I thought everything was okay. But the next day when I
