In the first couple of years after the invasion of France, the German army occupied the northern part of the country.

The German soldiers were instructed to act like true gentlemen when interacting with the French civilians. This was because Hitler felt that the French were an “Aryan” people and they should be treated with respect.

The Germans occupied many French towns and cities. The soldiers were ordered to not to loot the homes of the French. They were also not allowed to have any interaction with the wives and daughters of the Frenchmen.

The soldiers were given money by the German military to buy food and other items from the French instead of taking them by force. This policy lasted until 1943 when the Germans were desperate for food and other supplies and the population of France had been drastically reduced due to the Nazis brutal tactics.
