In no specific order, because it's all pretty damn important.

1. The Battle of Tannenberg, in which the Germans destroyed two whole Russian armies and captured over 90,000 prisoners. (August/September 1914) The war in the east dragged on for years longer than it otherwise would.

2. The Battle of Ypres (First), with which the Germans perfected the use of poison gas. (April 22 - May 25, 1915) Tens of thousands of dead and maimed soldiers, a new standard for warfare is set.

3. The Battle of Gallipoli, in which Britain and France tried to break through Turkey and attack Germany from the north and east. The Germans helped the Turks defeat the invasion and over 100,000 Allies were killed. (February 1915- January 1916)

4. The Battle of Verdun. This was one of the deadliest battles of the entire war, lasting 303 days and costing over 700,000 casualties on both sides. (February - December 1916)

5. The Battle of the Somme, with which the Germans learned to fully co-ordinate their machine guns and artillery. This came at the cost of over a million casualties between both sides over the four months of the battle. (July-November 1916)

6. The Battle of Cambrai, in which the Allies developed tank warfare. The initial break-through was impressive but ultimately failed to achieve any real gains before the Germans adapted. The Battle of Megiddo, in which the Germans launched their last, big, gas attacks, against the Allied armies in Palestine. The gas worked so well that the Armies were sent reeling back months in retreat to help support the struggle in France. (September 1918)

9. The Battle of Megiddo (Second), in which the Allies learned how to properly counter gas attacks, and used their experience from the front in France to beat back the Germans. (September 1918)

10. The Battle of Cambrai (Second), in which the Allies, using their experiences on both the Somme, Amiens, and Megiddo, learned that the best way to fight the Germans was directly through no mans land.
