On May 5, 1814, Napoleon Bonaparte was exiled to Saint Helena after his final defeat in the Napoleonic Wars. He died five days after his arrest.

Exactly one month later, the Bourbon monarchy was restored in France. The restoration marked the end of the First French Republic, which had lasted for over 15 years, and the return of the French monarchy under Louis XVIII, the younger brother of the guillotined Louis XVI.

The restoration was largely the result of the Allied powers' defeat of Napoleon at the Battle of Paris in March 1814, which forced him to abdicate the French throne. The Bourbon monarchy had also maintained popular support among many French citizens, who were eager to see an end to the Napoleonic Wars and the restoration of stability and order in France.

Louis XVIII, who had lived in exile in England since his flight from Versailles in 1791, returned to Paris and was recognized as the rightful king of France by the Allied powers. He was sworn in as king on May 6, 1814, marking the beginning of the Bourbon Restoration.

The restoration period, which lasted until the July Revolution of 1830, was marked by a series of attempts to repress the revolutionary legacy of the French Revolution, while also maintaining many of the reforms that had been introduced during the Revolution. The period saw a number of repressive laws, including the "Charte" or constitutional charter of Louis XVIII, which enshrined many of the privileges of the old nobility and restricted the rights of the common people. The period also saw the restoration of the Catholic Church as the official state religion in France.

Despite these efforts, the Bourbon monarchy never fully regained its pre-revolutionary legitimacy, and it was eventually overthrown in the July Revolution of 1830, which saw the establishment of the July Monarchy under Louis Philippe, a member of the Orleans dynasty.
