Dachau was created on March 10, 1933 and today marks 90 years since it was first established. Dachau was a concentration camp that was established shortly after Hitler took power, in 1933. It was the first regular concentration camp, rather than a getting away with forced labour or death in mass arrests and pogroms.

Dachau would be used to detain political opponents (including communists and social democrats), Jehovah's Witnesses, Romani people, homosexuals and, ultimately, Jews.

Dachau would become famous for being the camp where prisoners were forced to perform labour and where prisoners were often used for medical experiments. Ultimately, Dachau would become known as the camp where prisoners were beaten to death, shot dead, and where prisoners were ultimately sent to the gas chambers.

Dachau would be liberated by Allied forces on April 29, 1945. It is estimated 41,500 prisoners had passed through the camp. Over 31,000 prisoners died at Dachau, with 12,000 of those prisoners dying in the final months of the war.

I think it is important that we remember these camps and remember the lives lost in them. It is a stark reminder of how things can go wrong in society and how easily we can all be led down an evil path, without even noticing.

Thank you for taking the time to read this.
