When I was a kid in the '80s my dad would buy a little bag of potato chips and my brother and I would fight over who was gonna get the chip with the little extra piece of potato on it.

I recently stumbled upon this habit we had and it got me thinking, does anyone else ever do that? Or was it just me and my brother who thought that little extra bit of potato on a chip was the best thing ever, like having won the lottery or something.

This was during the '80s, my dad would buy a bag of Lays chips, and we'd fight over who got to eat the chip that had the little extra piece of potato on it. It wasn't like he was opening a bag of chips and a potato had fallen into it or anything like that, we're talking about chips that were all uniform, and we'd fight over who got the one with the extra little piece of potato. We'd do this every time my dad opened a new bag of chips.

For those who have never eaten a chip, for those who've never experienced the world we lived in, the '80s in America, let me tell you, it didn't matter if you got the chip with the little extra piece of potato. You could have had a chip with twice the amount of potato as the one that didn't have any extra and no one would have given a fuck, it was the '80s, we were rich, we were the most powerful nation on earth. There was no chip that was any better than another chip, they were all good, the one with the extra little piece of potato was just better. It was like winning a lottery or something.

I mention this because as an adult I can't believe my dad let my brother and I do this, or maybe he did the same thing growing up. We never ate at each others houses or anything like that. We'd fight over the chip with the little extra piece of potato every time we opened a bag. It didn't matter if the chips were salted or sour cream & onion or barbecue or anything, it didn't matter what type of chips we were eating, we fought over the chip with the extra little piece of potato.

When I think back on this, I wonder how many other kids and their siblings fought over a chip that had a little extra piece of potato on it? Or maybe they fought over the chip with the broken piece off of it, or maybe it was the chip with a little extra salt. Was there some sort of chip pecking order when you were a kid? I know there is now, I have a nephew, he fights over the chip with the extra little piece of potato.
