She became pregnant and the child died, so the tribe sold her as a wife to Temujin. Temujin had to give up his own horse in order to pay the dowry.

Borte became pregnant again and her husband had to give her up to a rival clan because the Merkid were at war with them. He managed to rescue her and then married another wife. After Genghis Khan conquered the Merkid, he killed his second wife and married Borte.

During the Battle of Samarkand, she disguised herself as a servant and rode a white horse into the heart of the enemy army, where she captured a high-ranking officer, who was then killed. This greatly boosted the Mongol morale. Her bravery was remembered and she was called "The Great".

Source: "Genghis Khan: To the Soul of the Law" by Igor de Rachewiltz, 2004.
