I’ve always thought of the ancient Greeks as cowards. They were afraid of dying but would write beautiful odes to honor bravery and courage.

This comes from the fact that the ancient Greeks thought it was wrong to show pain, discomfort or suffering, or to speak of it, in polite society. They believed it was unbecoming of a civilized man, and that he should suppress his emotions and avoid showing weakness. The ancient Greeks saw courage as a virtue, and that a true warrior should be able to endure pain and suffering with equanimity. They saw it as an act of bravery to conceal their own feelings of fear, weakness and discomfort. And if they felt pain or fear, they would avoid showing it.
