The 1619 Project is a pack of lies

I have been reading about the 1619 project, and it seems like a bunch of crap. I am a black person that feels the project does a disservice to black people by portraying us as helpless victims. We have overcome many barriers to achieve success in America. The project takes an extremely pessimistic view of America's founding. I believe that America is a nation "conceived in liberty and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal." That this is the true purpose of America, not the opposite, as the project would suggest. <br><br>In school we have been taught that the Europeans came to America to exploit the land and enslave black people. This is not entirely true. The European colonizers came here to settle and create their new home. Many of these colonizers came here fleeing persecution. The idea that every last European colonizer was motivated by greed and a sense of white supremacy is a lie. I also hate that the project suggests every black person was a helpless victim that was ripped from "peace and happiness" in Africa, shipped across the ocean, and forced into slavery. Many of the enslaved people that were shipped to America had been captured or sold into slavery in Africa. I am not saying every single person that was enslaved was guilty of anything, but many of them had sold other Africans into slavery. <br><br>Many of the enslaved people that were shipped to America had been warring with neighboring tribes for resources. It was not uncommon for a tribe to capture a member of another tribe and sell them into slavery, so it was also common practice for Europeans to do the same. Many of the enslaved people that were held in captivity in Africa, were still held in captivity in America. Enslavement is a systemic issue that has existed across many cultures, and to suggest that the 1619 project is the only lens we should use to view America's history is ridiculous. America is a flawed nation, but it is not the flawed nation the 1619 project makes it out to be. We should seek to understand all perspectives, rather than rely on propaganda.
