I am currently an eighth grader (12-13 years old) that is going to be starting high school this coming August. In middle school, we got a World History textbook that was used to teach us about different parts of the world such as ancient Egypt, Greece, Rome, China, Japan, Vietnam, and many others. We got a U.S History textbook that taught us about American History, from the discovery of America to the Civil War, and another textbook on Government, Geography, and other miscellaneous topics.

Now, what I am confused about is that why is it that we don't learn about certain things in our textbooks that we see in popular media like movies, TV shows, and online documentaries? Why do textbooks often sugarcoat or leave out certain topics? I don't have anything against the United States, but I do wish that we learn about other cultures besides our own. In my U.S History textbook, there was no information about the Vietnam War, only the American Civil War. We also didn't learn about other world wars like WWI and WWII.

This might be a stupid question, but I think it's weird that we learn about the ancient Greeks and Romans more than other cultures that lived thousands of years ago. I think it's also weird that we learn about European explorers who traveled to America instead of the cultures that were already there, like the Native Americans. I also think it's weird that we learn about the American Revolution and the Founding Fathers instead of the people that fought against America, like the British. I wish that we could learn about all kinds of different cultures, not just Western Culture.
