I thought most states were like California and that owning a handgun is a no go?

I'm over here in Ohio, I don't plan to own a gun anytime soon, but I thought that most states had laws that were similar to California. It's crazy that you can buy a gun without a background check. I'm surprised that there isn't more calls for the federal government to create national gun laws.
