Why does it seem that most “gun owners” don’t own guns for self defense?

I’ve been a gun owner for a few years now and while I do believe in owning a gun for self defense, most of the people I know that own guns own them for hunting, sport shooting, or just “cause”. I understand owning a gun just because, it’s a right and you can enjoy it. But why do most gun owners not own guns to protect their homes/families? <br><br>For me, I grew up in a rough inner city neighborhood, even though I was just a kid I was exposed to gun violence, drugs, and other shit that I really didn’t want to be exposed to. Ever since I was out on my own I make sure my home is secured and I’m always on the lookout for potential threats. I don’t necessarily trust the system to protect me, so I have to protect myself and my family. That’s why I own a gun. <br><br>Am I the only one that thinks like this? Do you own a gun for self defense or other reasons?
