How would you handle the situation where you see a person begging or being homeless?

This is a question that I've always had trouble with, and I thought that people here might be able to offer some advice.

The situation that I'm imagining is a person on a street corner begging. This person is probably homeless, and they're probably begging in order to get some money to buy food.

I'm a little conflicted because I would never want to give money to someone who is going to use it for drugs. I think that giving money for drugs is a lot worse than letting someone go hungry. If a homeless person is already in a bad situation, giving them money to buy drugs would only make things worse.

However, I also think that it's wrong to let someone go hungry, especially a child. I understand that it's not a lot of money, and that giving someone money isn't going to solve the problem, but I still don't want to see people suffering.

So, how would you handle the situation?
