Im not american but I have lots of American friends, and the current US situation with stricter gun laws has been a major topic of discussion. Some of my friends are pro 2nd amendment, and some are anti.

The pro 2nd amendment folks usually cite self defense and hunting as reasons to keep owning guns. I understand the hunting argument as I think it is reasonable for people to hunt and enjoy meat that they hunt and enjoy the challenge of hunting. However, I just don't understand how it is OK to own a gun without any intention of hunting with it? Like, what's the point? Is it just to enjoy shooting? Is it just for collecting?

As for self defense, I can understand that argument. I live in the Middle East and it isn't uncommon for people to own guns for self defense purposes.

What are your thoughts on owning a gun if you are not from a country where it is socially accepted to own a gun?
