How come rich countries have lower population growth rates than poorer countries?

I’m struggling to understand how rich countries have lower population growth rates than poor countries. Doesn’t the wealthier you are, the more likely you are to have more children?<br><br>The United States, for example, has a TFR of just 1.87, which is below replacement rate. India, by contrast, has a TFR of 2.3.<br><br>I just don’t understand how this is possible.
