Why do people hate socialism?

I am genuinely curious why so many people in the US seem to be vehemently against any form of socialism. I understand that the US and the Soviet Union were major opponents in the Cold War, but the US has adopted many socialist policies and socialism is currently being used by many other major countries. Why is it that socialism is always demonized in the US?
