I can’t understand why so many people hate the phrase “get a better job” so much.

I often see comments like “but the dude who owns the fast food joint worked hard to get to that position, so it’s not his fault” or “he has to do what he can to feed himself, but it’s not his fault that he doesn’t have the options to feed himself otherwise”. I think it is kind of obnoxious for the average guy to tell a fast food employee that they should “just get a better job”, because they don’t have the privilege of having access to all the opportunities that the guy telling them has had.

But if we are going to be serious, it’s the only advice that actually helps. If the dude working at McDonald’s wants a better life, he has to work his way towards that. It’s not the job of the McDonald’s franchise owner to provide the guy with a better life. If the dude working at McDonald’s doesn’t want to work his way towards a better life, then he will continue to be stuck in the lower rungs of life. If we want people to have better lives, we have to make them think that they have the power to improve their lives on their own. Saying “it’s not his fault” won’t make his life better.
