I used to work at a Wal-Mart. I was one of those rude teenage cashiers who would give you grief if you didn’t scan your items right or if you tried to pay with a $50. I was a bad cashier. I also was very bitter towards customers and would have fun ruining their day by being the worst cashier I could be.

But one day I was walking down the music aisle when a bunch of CDs caught my eye. I picked them up and walked straight to the exit without going to the checkout. I thought I was being pretty clever.

I got to the door and the alarm didn’t go off. I had successfully stolen a bunch of CDs. I put them in a bag and walked out of the store without paying a cent. I felt like a boss.

I did that several more times. I’d walk down to the music aisle, grab what I wanted, and walk out without paying. I never even got caught. I was pretty proud of myself.

One day, I was at a different store. I saw a CD I liked and I was tempted to steal it. But then I remembered the Wal-Mart and I decided against it. It just didn’t feel right anymore.

I haven’t stolen anything in years, not even a CD.
