I live in Michigan where a large part of the country is orchards and apple picking. We used to go to an orchard in northern Michigan every year for our family vacation. The place was pretty large and a lot of it wasn’t maned. They had a lot of signs up telling us to stay on the paths but no one was really there to monitor us. I know that some of these places do a lot of their business from people bringing apple peels and cores out of the orchard. They can’t make apples grow back so they have to charge people for entering.

Anyway, every year we would go, my brothers and I would make sure to grab a few apples. At first it was small things, we would steal 5 or 10 apples. My family was oblivious and the staff didn’t really seem to pay any attention to us. It escalated over time, though, and by the last few years, my brothers and I would grab a few bags and fill them up with apples. I would guess we stole hundreds of dollars in apples.

We were never caught and I have never told anyone. I feel a little bad looking back. We would bring them home and can them and they would last us the year. I really do think the owners made more in the year that we went after us compared to the apples we stole because we went for 4 years.

I do want to add that my family made a fair amount of money. My dad worked for a very large company and we had some money. I never gave it much thought until now.

I have a lot of guilt about it. I’m not sure I could ever get over the feeling. I’m also very ashamed and I feel terrible.
