Why do you go to the range?

Never really thought about it, until now. I was watching a really popular channel on YouTube, and the owner was using the phrase (paraphrased) "range time" to describe shooting guns. So here's my question: Is it just mentally wrong to call the place where you go to shoot guns a "range"? Does it make more sense to call it a "shooting gallery"? So why do you go to the range?<br><br>Edit: I didn't really think this post would blow up, so I apologize for no tags.
