I’ve been working in the DoD as a software engineer for many years. For the past 5 years, I’ve been working with a small team of about 10 people on a piece of software that’s honestly useless. It’s supposed to be used by a very small community overseas but we know that they don’t use it yet we’re told to continue working on it.

Weve been asked to embed AI into the software but again, no one uses it. We tell them that no one uses the software why do we need to embed AI but we’re told to continue.

Honestly, I’m sick of this project. There’s no innovation. We don’t get to explore and instead are given a very narrow set of requirements that we need to just accept.

I feel like we’re doing nothing but lining contractors and program managers pockets with our tax dollars.

What can I do? I’ve been to my chain of command and they say that we need to continue this work regardless of if it’s actually used in real life or not.
