I stole a few hundred dollars of merchandise when I worked at the mall.

I grew up in a lower middle class family, but I didn’t think that was grounds to shoplift. I was desperate for things I couldn’t afford, and I had access to all of the codes and keys for the mall stores.

I worked for Sam Goody and one of my coworkers was a manager at Foot Locker. Most of the time he was there by himself so I would wait until 4 or 5 am (mall was 24/7 back in the day) and take some Nautica shirts and jeans out of Sam Goody’s mall front display window, throw them over the Footlocker wall between stores, and he would stash them behind the cash register until the morning.

I took at least 10-15 pairs of jeans and shirts from Nautica. I didn’t need that many, half of them were probably for my friends but it was the thrill of shoplifting something so expensive. (This was the 90s) Nautica was HUGE back then and I remember one pair of jeans being around $80. I took two display racks worth of shit every night.

I never got caught, and it was fun until it wasn’t, I guess. I got promoted at Sam Goody and didn’t work the overnight shift anymore. I moved on and forgot about it for the most part.

Edit: wow, this blew up. I just wanted to confess and move on with my life. Thank you for the support and kindness.
