Am I right that romance anime ended up being very narcissitic?

Maybe it's just me, but I remember being a kid and watching anime like Cardcaptor Sakura, Magic Knight Rayearth, Sailor Moon, Nana, etc. And romance was part of the story, but the story didn't revolve around it.

But at some point, I don't think I'm wrong to say the majority of anime is just romance, and the story is nonexistent outside of the romantic relationships of the main character. Things like What if a girl fell in love with my seed? Or what if I got sent back in time to relive high school, but as a girl this time to see if my crush liked me? Or what if I was the last man on earth, and 10 girls found out about it and decided I was the only person they were attracted to?

I'm not saying there isn't other subjects out at the moment, but I can't imagine that the majority of viewers here watch anything else anymore than romance, and it's a shame.

For something that's supposed to be about "love" it really comes off as narcissistic as fuck and not something remotely healthy.

What happened?
