CMV: If you can afford to, you should have a pet

I've had a dog since I was a toddler. I'm now in college and I've been able to care for her. I understand that it is a large commitment. It also requires a lot of work, time, money, etc. However, I've always had pets. My dad had dogs when he was growing up, and now that I am a young adult, I would like to think I'm doing right by him by keeping that tradition alive. I know I will be able to care for my pet, as long as I have a stable income, and I'm working to become a professional, but I know that a lot of people can't afford to care for a pet, and it breaks my heart.

I would love to hear arguments from the opposite side of this. I don't want to sound judgmental to people who don't have pets. I understand it's a lot to ask to have a pet, but I feel like I am doing a good thing, and I would love to hear some opposing arguments to see if I have changed my view.
