If you could build any fantasy city in real life, which one would you choose?

There are some absolute classics in fantasy fiction, and it's plausible that they could be built, if not done exactly the same way (you don't have magic in the real world, for example), with a lot of work and a lot of money, but you could probably do it.

There's places like Minas Tirith from the Lord of the Rings, and Hogwarts from Harry Potter, but the one that I personally would choose, if it were possible and plausible, would be Ankh Morpork from the Discworld series.

Ankh Morpork, if you don't know, is a massive, dirty, grimy city on the Discworld that is equal parts medieval fantasy and early 19th century London, it's a huge trading hub and it's the centre of the Disc's politics, it's biggest industries are smuggling, fishing and thievery (you can be a thief in the city, but you have to pay a tax, and if you are caught, you'll be arrested, but the Ankh-Morpork Guild of Thieves and Assassins, which is literally a guild that you can join if you're a thief or assassin, will bail you out), there's also rich people, like the Lord of the city, Lord Havelock Vetinari, who is an absolute tyrannical dictator, but he's also a good one, in that he's efficient and knows that sooner or later, there will be a revolution that will end up with him dead, so he tries to keep the struggles of the city to the bare minimum and make a life that everyone can live comfortably, and sooner or later, there will be a war that will make the city rich and will bring his reign to an end.

Anyway, the city is a very, very polluted one, the river that it sits on, the Ankh (aynk is the Discworld's version of ankh, which means life), is literally a crystalline liquid, the water doesn't evaporate, but if you were to dip a hand into it, the water would basically crystallize around your hand, the river is also where you get the name of the city Ankh-Morpork, if you wanna see a map of it, it's basically a river that splits in two, like the Thames (Morpork is the other river in the city that splits from the Ankh), and they both flow into the sea, so the city's geometry is kinda like London.

You can also walk along the river in the city, but it's not exactly the most pleasant thing to do, you'll probably end up dead, or just distraught, the river's incredibly smelly, it's also where the city's sewage goes, but it's not the only reason it's like that, the other reason is that the city's incredibly unsanitary, the city's incredibly old, and like London, it was basically built on top of old ruins, so the city's geometry has changed a lot over time, and there are a ton of areas in the city where the river's "tunnelled" underground, it's also very meandering, so it's not like, a nice, straight river, it's incredibly meandering, so you can probably walk alongside the river for miles and really not have a clue where you are, there's also very little in the way of city planning, and there are a lot of areas where the river just isn't visible.

Now, obviously, were you to build Ankh Morpork in real life, you would have to make a few changes, the biggest one being that you wouldn't have the Ankh or the Morpork, the other thing you could do is you could build it around a river, just, you know, not have it be an unsanitary, crystalline sludge that you can't use, you could also just have it not be a sludge, but I don't think you'd ever be able to get rid of the smell, so it's just better to have it not be the Ankh were you to build Ankh Morpork in real life, the other thing you'd probably have to do is have more city planning, it's not a major thing, but it would probably make the city easier to navigate.

If you were able to do it, it would be an amazing thing, it would be a very strange city, but it would also be an amazing place to visit, because there's a lot of things to do in Ankh Morpork, like there's the Unseen University, which is basically the city's university, but it's also the biggest school on the Disc for wizards, the city's also the centre of what little journalism there is on the Disc, with the Ankh Morpork Times, which I think is the only newspaper on the Disc, and it's primarily run by people who aren't from Ankh Morpork, it's also the city where you can find the Ankh Morpork City Watch, which is the city's police, and it's comprised of a lot of people that aren't from Ankh Morpork, they're also a major part of the Discworld series, the city also has the Patrician, which is like the Lord of the city, and like I mentioned earlier, he's a dictator, but he's a good one, the city's also comprised of many different districts, like the Dolly Sisters, the Treacle Street, the Dimwell, the Isle of Gods, the opera district, the docks, the dockside, the restless, and many others, the city's just got a lot to offer, there are a lot of different things you can do in Ankh Morpork, and were you ever to build it in real life, the city's geometry would just be so unique, it would be a really interesting place to visit, and it probably be an interesting place to live in, the city's also very, very culturally diverse, you've got people from many different cultures and many different cities and countries and races, it's just a city that will make you feel like you can do anything, and it would be sooner or later that the city will be the centre of a war, or revolution, or something like that, but that's what makes the city so appealing, it's not like other cities in places like Europe, it's not a city that's sooner or later gonna be a UNESCO world heritage site, it's a place were you kinda know that at any moment, it could just burst into flames, but it's also a city that's probably gonna survive anything that's thrown at it, the city's basically eternal in places like the Discworld series, it's not sooner or later that the city will be destroyed, it's not gonna be like any places like Pompeii, the city's just gonna thrive no matter what's thrown at it, and were you to build it in real life, that would probably be the same, the city struggles, but it always finds a way out, the city's always plausible and realistic, but it's still a fantasy city that you could probably find yourself in in your wildest dreams.
