I’m an American living in Germany and I’m appalled by the entitled “can I get this without X” requests

I’m American and I’ve lived in southern Germany for a number of years. I think it’s absolutely ridiculous that people insist on customize their food, especially at traditional German restaurants. This is not the first time I’ve heard this and it’s always been a pet peeve of mine but today was the straw that broke the camels back.

Today I went with a friend to a local restaurant in a small village. The restaurant is run by an older married couple and they make everything themself. It specializes in traditional German dishes.

I got a salad and a Gyro as an appetizer and a ravioli dish as the main course. My friend ordered a cheeseburger. Now here is the thing. This was not a normal cheeseburger as the toppings were different. This was a completely different burger with completely different toppings but somehow still called a cheeseburger.

The chef came out to take our order and my friend orders the cheeseburger but without this and without that and add this, add that, add this and that. I was appalled. He’s going to completely change the dish and then still call it what it isn’t. I think it’s rude.

Especially when she said “well what’s the cheeseburger come with?” And after the chef names of the toppings she’s like “ok so I don’t want this and I don’t want that, I want this instead of this and can I get this extra and can I get that extra?” Honestly I wanted to crawl under the table.

And then we got our food and my friend is complaining about how it didn’t taste good or this wasn’t tasty or that wasn’t tasty. And I’m like well you asked for all the changes. Absolutely ridiculous.

And it’s always like this. I go to the restaurant with my friend or go to the restaurant with my other friend and they always make additions and subtractions. I don’t get it.

If you go to a foreign country and you go to a restaurant that specializes in that country’s cuisine, why would you order the dish if you don’t want to have it the way it’s truly supposed to taste?
