I've been talking to a family friend who has been homeless multiple times, and she has given some ideas for an app that could help people who have been homeless or are currently homeless. It's *NOT* a data collection tool, meaning no personal information will be asked about the user. It will be entirely free to use, and the information will be manually entered by the people who provide these resources. That way, you can't have an establishment just submitting things they don't offer.

The app would be structured into the following categories:

- Food: Restaurants, pantries, and other organizations that give out food. Could be filtered by zip, dietary restrictions, and details of the resource (time, requirements, ect)

- Medical: Clinics, hospitals, and other places that a homeless person can go to if they are sick or injured. Could be filtered by zip, details of resource, and insurance status (in the US I imagine, but in Australia insurance doesn't matter because we have Medicare, so maybe not there?)

- Hygiene: Bath houses, showers, places where you can get a haircut ect

- Employment: Organizations that can help you search for a job (like resume work shops and interview training centers), and organizations that are currently hiring (with details of course)

- Housing: Shelters, NGOs that will work on finding you a place to live, and cheap hotels ect. Right now the system in America is archaic. You are supposed to go to a shelter, but most shelters don't have a list of resources that you can access. They kind of do what they want, in terms of providing resources. There are also very few of them. For example, in Austin there is one large shelter, and if you are one of the 500 people who can get in then you have access to resources. But what about the people who don't get in?

- Addiction and Mental Health: Resources for coping with addiction and mental health, including support groups and counseling centers

- Legal: Places who offer free legal assistance, who will work with you to get your ID ect

- Funeral Services: A lot of homeless people are denied funeral services because companies know they don't have money. I think they should be able to find funeral services with dignity, and I was offered a Techstars program partially because of this aspect of the app.

All of the organizations would have a profile, and users could write up reviews for them, like a Yelp. There would also be a newsletter with a list of resources that are only temporary, like food drives or pop up clinics.

I understand that the best thing we could give in this situation is actual homes, but this is what we have right now.

I've been offered a Techstars program, and I have gotten a good response from shelters and resource centers. I have been able to assemble a team, and we are going to work on this the summer of 2024.

I would love any thoughts you have! Please don't tell me about existing apps, I have done my research.
