CMV: the current college education system is broken and the majority of people do not need or benefit from higher education, so why are we allowing colleges to charge outrageous prices for a degree that will most likely not increase your earning potential after graduation?

My argument is that we as Americans need to rethink the entire college education system because the current system is unsustainable, unfair, and not serving the students in the way that they deserve.

I recently saw an article stating that 1 in 3 college graduates are working jobs that don’t require a college degree.

College graduates are being saddled with large amounts of debt. The average student debt per graduate is over $31,000 and I believe this is a problem for the majority of people because in many fields a degree does not guarantee a job after graduation or a higher salary than if you had taken a more vocational path.

I am a firm believer that if you want to be a doctor, engineer, scientist, etc, that you need to be educated in your field, but if you want to be a dentist hygienist, a welder, carpenter, electrician, HVAC repair person, or plumber, then a college degree is not necessary and certainly not required to do the job well.

I understand that some careers will require higher education and that we need to protect that, but why are we forcing students to pursue higher education when the majority of them won’t need it or use it in the workforce?
